Hiking in Middle Tennessee!

Hiking PhotoTennesseans have been blessed when it comes to hiking adventures! With level lowlands in the west, hill country in the center and mountains in the east, Tennessee has numerous hiking opportunities.  A good hiking adventure can clean your mind, re-connect you to nature and provide a fresh outlook on the fast paced lives we lead. Hiking can mean a one hour trek through many local park trails, a weekend juant through the Cumberland Plateau or a month long adventure on the Appalachian Trail. Whatever your skill level is, Tennessee has the terrain and some excellent scenery to go with it. It all starts with that first step, so plan up, gear up & get out there and enjoy!

Hiking and Conservation

Green TNHiking goes with Conservation like peanut butter goes with jelly. These Earth bound individuals get closer than most to our wonderful ecosystem and know first hand, the importance of conservation. I have met many Tennessee Hikers carrying more out of the woods than they carried in. That's why it's called the volunteer state. Not only do many of these hikers "leave no trace" when they trek through our parks, they are also known to remove non-native plants and volunteer to maintain trails and access roads. Most of them carry this respect for our planet in their everyday lives by recycling, driving greener cars and paying close attention to their carbon footprint.

Nashville Hiking Group

Nashville Hiking Meetup LogoThe Nashville Hiking Meetup Group is one of the most active hiking clubs in Tennessee and possible the nation. Kelly Stewart, the organizer, started the group in 2006. He and his assistant organizers have  planned and organized over 624 events so far. As well as the many hiking adventures this group has had, the member base of over 2,820 hikers has also participated in numerous environmental clean ups and volunteered hundreds of hours to work at local parks. Great Job Kelly & Members! (website)

The Cumberland Trail

Experience Tennessee hiking and backpacking at its best! The Cumberland Trail (CT), a Tennessee State Scenic Hiking Trail, became Tennessee's 53rd state park in 1998. The Justin P. Wilson Cumberland Trail State Park will contain a core corridor of 300-plus miles of trail beginning in the Cumberland Gap National Park (Ky) and stretching south to Chickamauga Chattanooga National Military Park and Prentice Cooper Wildlife Management Area just outside Chattanooga. In addition to providing multiple recreational opportunities, this protected greenway will act as a buffer to protect water quality and provide natural habitat for animals. The CT is designed for hikers by hikers. The long distance trail provides access to some of Tennessee's most stunning landscapes: waterfalls, gorges, four bird and wildlife rich Tennessee Wildlife Management Areas, a National Park Wild and Scenic Area, two State Parks, two protected State Natural Areas, and two National Parks. The CT is primarily a hiking trail, designed and built to minimize the potential environmental impact on sensitive wildlife habitat, unique aquatic or terrestrial habitats, or endangered/threatened species.
